Become Financially Independent with Aquaponic Farming

Nutrition is highly important for a good health. Unfortunately, less healthy food is available on the market, while the fatty, semi-prepared food has taken over the supermarkets and local store. It is getting more and more difficult to find organic food that is not only tastier, but it is also healthier than the crops grown with chemical fertilizers. What is even more alarming is that the price of organic food grows significantly day by day and less people afford to buy fresh fruits and vegetables necessary for a balanced diet. If you are in such a situation, then you should start growing your own vegetables and fish by using the aquaponic farming.

Aquaponics’ principles are simple: you grow fish in a tank, proliferate the plant seeds, care for them during their development period and in less than one year harvest your own crops. It is as simple as it can be to get fresh veggies and herbs, grow fish and have a balanced diet with little money and almost no effort. It may sound unbelievable, but this is the plain truth!

What is even better is that you can place your mini aquaponic farm wherever you want in your house. You can keep it hidden in your garage or you can boast with it by making it the center of your living room. Anywhere you like, there is a little space and appropriate light you can put your small tank and veggies, you can even find them a place them in your flat! This will offer you total independence from the rising prices. You will be able to have whatever veggies you want without spending huge amounts of money on the market.

This way, not only will you save some money for the little pleasures of the life that you have always postponed, but you will also have fresh food on your table and will be able to offer your family a healthy, tasty meal. So, why spend lots of money and let others make fortunes on your behalf when you can have everything you need for your meal with the aquaponic farming? It has never been so easy!

Easiest Way to Grow Organic Food

Nowadays there is this growing trend of eating only organic food. Yet, not all the products claiming to be organic are always this way. Moreover, you can spend more on products claiming to be organic and get lower quality than the normal vegetables grown with pesticides. The only way you can be sure that the food you are consuming is 100% organic is to start growing it yourself. Now it is extremely easy with aquaponics.

The Easiest Way to Grow Organic Food with Aquaponics

This new type of farming is extremely easy to put in practice, highly convenient and profitable. There are very few things you will need in order to set it up, things which are also quite affordable, so you will not have to spend a fortune on costly equipment. In addition to that, it is so easy to mount and start the aquaponic farm that you will need only few minutes to understand the principles and another few to put them in practice. In a matter of days you will place your aquaponic system and start growing your fish. Their role is that of producing the bio-nutrients for the plants. Once there are enough nourishing substances in the water, you will be able to propagate the seeds and then wait for them to grow.

Meanwhile you will have to take good care of the fish, so that they continue to produce food for the plants. The good this is that you will not have to clean the water for the fish yourself, as this is what the plants will do with their roots. Thus, it will be easier not only to grow plants, but it will also be easier to grow fish this way than if you were setting only an aquaculture.

Another advantage of the aquaponic system is the fact that it is easy to assemble and disassemble, so that you can take it with you if you change houses. You can put it everywhere in your house or in your garage as long as the plants have the necessary amount of light to produce their food. Yet, make sure that you harvest all your crops, as you lose all the plants when disassembling the aquaponic system.

Getting organic food has never been so easy! Just set up your aquaponic farming system and you will feel the real taste of organic food. A true delight for you and your family!

Where Should You Place Your Aquaponic System

If you are decided to set up an aquaponic system in which to grow vegetables and fish for you and your family, there are some things which you should know. The types of fish, the seeds which can be propagated and the details about the appropriate water conditions are the basic notions you have to know before venturing in this activity. Once you know that you can start putting all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Where Should You Place Your Aquaponic Mini Garden

The answer is simple. You can put it anywhere you like as long as the place has enough light to offer the plants. As you probably know, the plants need light to prepare their food. If the place where they are put has no or few light, they will be unable to prepare their food, which in time will lead to their death. This is something you do not want! Yet, if you have a room (no matter if it is your kitchen, living room or garage) where there is a moderate light, then there is where you should place your aquaponic garden.

If you live in an area with extreme temperature or weather conditions, there are also some other things you will need to take into consideration. First, the temperature: your fish like to have a moderate temperature (usually varies according to the type of fish you choose), so you should monitor it to meet your fish’s needs. If you are in a desert are a you will need to keep them away from the direct solar rays, while if outside is freezing you will need to make sure that the water is warm enough to provide your fish a good environment.

You should also keep your fish and plants away from chemicals as they are quite sensitive to that, so the room where you keep your cleaning products will not be a great location for them. Rather go for airy places where the plants can feel good and with moderate temperature so that the fish will grow and develop properly.

If you have decided to install such a system in your house, then you probably know what this is and how it could help you. However, there may still be things which can interest or help you. Below you will find 5 essential things which you should know in order to obtain spectacular results.

Selecting a location

The place where you put your aquaponic system is highly important for the way in which the plants and the fish will develop. In order to obtain great results you should make sure that the temperature from the room is not too high, nor too low, that there is enough light for the plants to prepare their food and that no wind or extreme weather conditions will reach them. Also, make sure that no harming chemical substances can get inside the water as this means death for both your fish and your plants.

Provide plenty of oxygen

The happier your fish are, the better your system will work! This is why you need to oxygenize the water on a daily basis and make sure your fish have all the “comfort” they need.

Choose the right fish

The aquaponic system works well with almost all types of fish. Yet, there are states in which you are not allowed to grow whatever type of fish you want, so you will want to see what types of fish you are allowed to have before starting your aquaponic system as you do not want any problems with the law.

Placing the planting bed or pots

In order to make the harvest much easier, you should place the pots or the entire system at your waits level. This way you will not have to bend over, making the daily care routine a much easier activity.

Providing supplemental nutrients

There are cases in which your fish may not provide all the nutrients needed for your plants. If the quantity is lower than what the plants need, then you will have to supply them with the respective substances. In most cases you will need to add iron, calcium carbonate or potassium carbonate.

Aquaponics is an easy activity which will provide you with the necessary vegetables and fish in a short amount of time. Just follow the tips mentioned above and you will have great success in your attempt to grow organic food in your home.

Most Suitable Fish for Aquaponics

Aquaponic farming can offer you great satisfactions: tasty and cheap vegetables and legumes as well as healthy fish during all year round. However, in order to obtain the best results you will first need to have some basic information about what aquaponics means and how can you make the most of it.

Aquaponics is a new type of farming which relays on the symbiosis between the plants and the fish. This means that the fish provides the plants the necessary food while the plants, by feeding on the fish’s excrements clean their water, thus making their environment a “comfortable” home. Because the fish are highly sensitive on chemicals, but also because they provide the plants with all the nutrients they need, there will be no need for you to use any pesticides or fertilizers to make your plants grow bigger and stronger, thus obtaining fresh, healthy and organic veggies without too much struggle.

As you can see the fish you put inside the tank play a great role in the success of your aquaponic farming. This is why, you will need to take good care of them and at the same time pay attention to that type of fish you choose. While basically all types of fish are suitable for the aquaponic system, there are states in which different species of fish are not allowed to be grown inside the house. Thus, before populating your tank with fish make sure that you are allowed to grow that type of fish in your home.

What Are the Most Suitable Fish for Aquaponics

The species of fish which are recommended for the aquaponic system are Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, Chinese Catfish, Tilapia, Koi, Largemouth and Bluegill. However this list is not an exhaustive one and according to the area and state in which you live you can always try with some different types of fish. As well as you take good care of them and your fish are happy, there are great chances that your aquaponic farm will give great results in no less than a year!

Aquaponics can spare you of your daily trips to the market and offer you tasty, healthy vegetables for your entire family. But for this you need to take great care of the fish, which will basically make your plants grow healthy and beautiful.

Plants Can Be Grown in an Aquaponic System

Nowadays traditional farming is starting to lose ground in favor of the new ways of growing plants. Most people have directed their attention towards hydroponic farming which enables them to grow vegetables in their own house or their garage just using water and some specially designed pots. Yet, the drawback of the hydroponic farming is the fact that you will need to use chemical substances to feed the plants and make them grow normally. This significantly affects the taste and the quality of the crops.

With aquaponics this does not happen. Aquaponic relies on the symbiosis between plants and fish. Thus, you can define aquaponics as a mixture of aquaculture and hydroponics, where you get to grow both plants and fish in a perfect interdependence. Because of this, you will never need to use any type of chemical substances, thus resulting tastier and healthier crops. Only placing a small amount of chemicals in the water will immediately have serious effects on the fish, endangering their lives and you do not want that to happen.

What Plants Can Be Grown in an Aquaponic System

You may wonder what type of vegetables are you able to grow using the aquaponic system. Well, almost any plant you can think of, excluding, of course, the plants whose fruits grow inside the ground, like potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic and so on. Fruity vegetables like cucumbers, strawberries, tomatoes, squash, okra, pepper, melon; herbs like basil and oregano; different types of beans and peas as well as green leafy vegetables grow very well in this type of system.

What will amaze you even more is the great taste your veggies and legumes will have. You will not believe that something so good can be grown in your garage or in your living room. They have a far better taste than the veggies you buy from the market as they are all natural, organic and have no other chemical “improvements”. Just what is best of the plant! Your meals will be healthier and tastier!

If you want to obtain great results make sure you purchase organic seeds, so that you know exactly that your crops will be 100% organic. This way you will enjoy the real taste of freshly harvested vegetables in the comfort of your home. What can be better than that?!

Aquaponic Farming the Easy Way

Planting the seeds in your aquaponic garden is much easier than putting them in the ground. You just have to put them on a netting pot and … this is it! Then you just have to wait for them to start vegetating and grow. However, there is one little aspect you must know before placing the seeds and that is – the ideal moment when the seeds should be planted.

Many people purchase the fish, place them in the tank and in the same day they also place the seeds in the pots. This is by far the worst way of approaching aquaponics as the seeds, even though will grow and develop up to a certain point, they will die in a matter of days after they finish their own supplies if there are no nutrients in the water on which they can feed.

Thus, the perfect moment to place the seeds in the pots is when the fish excrements have turned into nutrients. The process through which you can obtain nutrients for your plants is quite simple. After you place the fish into the tanks, they will start freeing excrements into the water. Because the excrements contain ammonia, they are highly toxic for the fish. However, do not worry about that, as this issue is solved by nature itself. There are bacteria which transform the ammonia into nitrites and then into nitrates. In order for your plants to grow you need nitrates, so once the process of decomposing and transforming ammonia is over, the water will be ready to support the plant seeds.

The entire process can take up to 3 months, time in which you should not place any type of seeds in the pots as they will certainly die. There are also ways to speed up the process by inserting nitrates into the water before the fish excrements can transform. However, many people do not like to interfere in nature’s way. However, no matter what way you choose, it is recommended to monitor the amount of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates from the water, so that you can always know the quality of your water for both your fish and your vegetables.

Planting the seeds at the right time is essential if you want good crops and healthy fish, so monitor the quality of your water permanently, before and after planting. It is the only way through which you can obtain good crops.

What Is Aquaponics System

Aquaponics is the combination of an aquaculture system and hydroponic. In aquaponics, one grows plants and fish together in an integrated system. The fish wastes provide a food source for the growing plants and the plants roots provide a natural filter for the water the fish live in. This can create a sustainable ecosystem where both plants and fish can thrive.

Aquaponics can be one answer to a fish farmers problem of disposing of nutrient rich water and a hydroponic growers need for nutrient rich water. However, for the system to work properly there must be a balance between the food fed to the fish, the fish size and density and the number and size of plants. Generally the plant biomass is considerably greater than the fish biomass. In addition the plants may require additional foliar feeding to make up for some elements lacking in the fish water.

To make up an aquaponics system, a water reservoir is required to hold the fish and crustaceans and this water is then passed through a plan system before it returns to the water reservoir.

For a home hobby aquaponics system, people often use recycled plastic containers to hold the medium for their plants. These plastic containers can be linked together using special rubber grommets that allow standart irrigation fittings to be used. A hole saw is used to drill the correct hole in the plastic  then a top hat grommet is pushed into the hole the poly fitting is pushed into the grommet and pvc or poly tubing pushed onto the fitting. The best size to use for aquaponics in the 25 mm size as this allows faster drainege than the 19 mm or 13 mm or 6 mm size more commonly used for hydroponic applications.

For a small hobby aquaponics system, the first consideration is the size and location of the water reservoir. Fish and crustaceans do not thrive if the water temperature fluctuates so you need to consider insulating  the tank and keeping it away from direct sunlight. Work on having no more than 1 kilogram total weight of fish per 1000 litres of reservoir water. A reservoir that has a diameter depth retio of 3:1 will help with surface gas exchanges but some aeration will be appreciated by the fish as will about 10 cm of washed river gravel spread over the base of the tank.
